When most people think of chimney sweeps, they conjure an image of a soot-covered child in the midst of the Industrial Revolution. Chimney Sweeping Cambridge is an ancient profession. Records of people earning their living by clean chimneys go back as far as the 16th century. However, in a world in which modern conveniences such as central heating have largely replaced the once ubiquitous coal and wood fires used to heat homes, one could easily assume that chimney sweeps no longer exist. This would, however, be a false assumption: chimney sweeps are not the anachronisms most people presume them to be, but thoroughly modern professional tradesmen. If you are one of the growing number of people who have a functioning coal or wood fire in your home, it might well be in your interests to acquaint yourself with a modern day chimney sweep. Old-fashioned fireplaces are becoming increasingly coveted, and for good reason: a well restored fireplace can add great character to a room, and, if it is well-maintained, can be an excellent source of heat during the cold winter months. However, the benefits of having a real coal or wood fire in your home must be balanced by dedicating a little time and money to ensuring that your fireplace functions both safely and efficiently. The National Association of Chimney Sweeps defines the primary role of the modern chimney sweep as “to aid in the prevention of chimney fires and reduce the risk of dangerous fume emissions from blocked heating appliances, flueways and chimneys.” This article seeks to address some frequently asked questions, and to explain how a chimney sweep could help you to maintain a safer, more efficient fireplace.

How a fireplace works
As a fire burns in a fireplace, the air from the room goes through the grate and fuels the fire. As the fire burns, it releases numerous gases which rise, as they are lighter than the surrounding air. These gases then escape up the chimney and are released into the atmosphere. As these substances pass through the chimney, a substance commonly referred to as soot begins to accumulate on the walls. This includes a flammable substance called creosote. Over time, these deposits can begin to obstruct – and eventually completely block – the chimney. Such an obstruction can lead to an inefficient, and potentially unsafe, fireplace. This can be explained by the fact that a well-functioning chimney is necessary not only to allow potentially harmful gases to escape from the room, but also to ensure that the fire burns efficiently. As hot air ascends in the chimney, the fire sucks in more air from the room through the grate, in order to fill the space that has been left. Without this continuous supply of air, the fire would burn itself out. Deposits of flammable substances such as creosote also have the potential to cause chimney fires. Thus, a clean chimney is also a safer, more efficient chimney.
Can’t I clean my chimney myself?
If you have a day to devote to the task, lots of patience and the necessary equipment, it is possible to clean your chimney yourself. Bear in mind, however, that chimney sweeping Peterborough can be a somewhat messy process! Make sure that you cover the fireplace and carpet with plastic or a dust sheet before you begin. It is now possible to rent a vacuum cleaner specifically designed for cleaning chimneys from most DIY stores. This may be adequate if the chimney is in reasonably good condition, but it is unlikely to be of much use if the chimney has been neglected for a prolonged period or if there is a lot of impacted soot. If you cannot see far enough up the chimney to discern whether or not this is the case, or are unsure, it would probably be better to consult a professional chimney sweep than to risk overlooking an obstruction that might be a safety hazard. It is also possible to purchase chemicals which can be put onto the fire before it is lit. When these chemicals burn, they produce a gas which breaks down most of the substances commonly deposited inside chimneys. It is worth remembering that it is inevitable that loosened soot will end up crashing down into your fireplace, so be prepared for a fairly time-consuming clean-up! If you would prefer not to attempt either of these more modern methods, you could always hire some brushes. This takes a lot of patience and can be physically tiring. You will also need a sturdy ladder and quality footwear if you want to examine your chimney from the roof. If you choose to maintain your own chimney, it is worth remembering that keeping the chimney clean will not be your only task; routine maintenance tasks ought not to be overlooked. For example, firebacks will inevitably become damaged by the heat of the fire, and cracks may begin to appear. It is possible to do a patch-up job on smaller cracks, but in the event of larger cracks appearing, it is best to install a replacement. Whilst it is also possible to do both of these jobs yourself with the aid of a good DIY manual, it might be more convenient to consider hiring a professional.
Chimney Sweep Service
What are the benefits of hiring a professional chimney sweep?
A good chimney sweep will have the necessary training and experience to notice problems which might lead to chimney fires or inefficient burning and will be able to bring these problems to your attention. Most chimney sweeps will also inspect your chimney for potential problems from the roof. Even if you have an idea about what to look for, it might be problematic, or even dangerous, for you to attempt this yourself. It is also unlikely that your own untrained eye would notice more subtle problems, such as signs of freeze-thaw weathering. If a problem is noticed early, it will probably be easier, and cheaper, to fix. It is also much more convenient to hire a professional to take what will inevitably be a time consuming, physically draining and messy job off your hands. Hiring a professional would also bring you the peace of mind of knowing that problems have not been overlooked and that your chimney is safe and well-maintained.
How often should I have my chimney cleaned?
At least once a year. Chimney sweeps usually advise that chimneys ought to be cleaned after a period of prolonged disuse (over the summer for example). Many also advise that chimneys should be cleaned before the end of the heating season to ensure that the chimney is clear of animal nests and prepared for the subsequent idle period. If a chimney is used very often, it might be necessary to sweep it more often. A professional chimney sweep would be able to advise the optimum cleaning schedule for your chimney.
Do I need to have my chimney swept if I have a gas fire?
Yes, although less frequently. Blockages in chimneys connected to gas fires can lead to a build-up of carbon monoxide and other harmful gases. A professional chimney sweep can advise how often your chimney ought to be swept.
Where can I find a good chimney sweep?
As with many things, word of mouth is the best means of securing a reliable chimney sweep. If you do not know anyone else who has a real coal or wood fire, chimney sweeps can be found via a quick internet search and most will be more than willing to provide you with a list of references. Do not be afraid to follow these up. It is also important to ask how much experience the chimney sweep has, and whether or not he or she is fully insured. The National Association of Chimney Sweeps website also provides an excellent means of locating a reliable chimney sweep in your area. All members of the National Association of Chimney Sweeps are fully qualified and experienced, have full public liability insurance and issue certificates on completion of their work. For additional peace of mind, all members are also required to provide references on request. If you would prefer to contact the National Association of Chimney Sweeps by telephone, you can do so on +44 (0)1785 811 732. You can also contact the Guild of Master Chimney Sweeps, the professional association of chimney sweeps in the UK. They train, assess and monitor their members to ensure that customers receive the best service. If you are looking for a chimney sweep in the UK, please check their database of chimney sweeps in your area. Another accredited trade body that can help you find a qualified chimney sweep is the Association of Professional Independent Chimney Sweeps. Please see their website for more information and a list of members.
How much does it cost to hire a chimney sweep?
This depends upon where you live and how much work there is to do. If you live in a large house in very remote area which has several chimneys, you will obviously pay more than someone who lives in a smaller house which has only one or two chimneys. The best way to find out exactly how much the services of a professional chimney sweep will cost you is to contact one and ask for a quote for your property. As a rough guide, a homeowner looking for a sweep to clean two chimneys should expect to pay something in the region of £60 per chimney.
Some general tips
It is better to burn hard woods than soft woods. Not only do hard woods burn slower, making them more economical, they also make the fire burn hotter. This reduces the amount of creosote deposited inside the chimney, which will help keep your chimney cleaner for longer. Reducing the amount of this flammable substance inside your chimney also has considerable safety benefits.
Do not use artificial logs.
Purchase a good guard for your fireplace. A fire with a well-functioning chimney is still unsafe if sparks from the fireplace come into contact with a carpet or furniture.
The best safety precaution you can take is to have your chimney cleaned and inspected by a professional chimney sweep on a regular basis. There are, however, certain warning signs that you can look out for yourself. A fire that is burning more slowly than usual can be sign of a partially blocked chimney, as can the presence of smoke in the room.

I cannot recommend Mr Clever Clean highly enough- the whole process was seamless from initially arranging a quote , booking the appointment to the actual site visit. On site the gentlemen that attended were very polite and friendly - even when people were stopping and admiring the machine cleaning the guttering!! I will definitely be recommending their service to friends, family and work colleagues. A great business to work with!

The two operatives that came were professional and polite. Every step of the job was explained andwe were made aware of any hazards. The job was completed within the estimated timescale and they cleared, tidied the work area and left it as found. It was a pleasure to do business with this company. I would highly recommend them.
Paul Smith
This company was recently taken over by Caulton & Natalie who did an amazing job of cleaning our roof & drive. They don't use jet washing on the roof which is a definite no-no in our estimation. Our roof was covered in moss & alga & this was removed by hand, then a chemical treatment applied. The roof looked great shortly after treatment but will get even better in the days ahead as the weather will wash away any residue of alga. Altogether, we are very happy with the quality of service which was carried out in a professional manner. We hardly recognised the drive after treatment. We can thoroughly recommend this company.
Ronald Teasdale
Leah and Lisa were a pleasure to have in the house and did a great job. They brought a great selection of products and equipment with them including step ladders for reaching high corners. They worked hard and did a very professional job and were enthusiastic and energetic.

Had Gutters and fascias cleaned yesterday and very happy with the the results!Thank you!
There were several delays in processing this order due to Covid and materials shortages but at every step the company kept me fully informed. The final date and time offered was agreed to fit in with other work we were having done and Mr CleverClean kept the appointment, arriving exactly on time. The two operatives in the team explained clearly what they would be doing and how the result would achieved. They completed the task in the allotted time span and made a remarkably thorough job. They cleaned up carefully around our house and that of our neighbours. They were happy to work around the restriction of not being able to use our driveway. Overall, we were completely satisfied with the cleaning that they carried out although only time will tell the effectiveness of the spray treatment that was applied to the roof. I have no hesitation in recommending this company. well done.

Absolutely amazing! We had our block paving driveway cleaned and sealed and, after 16 years of neglect, Mr Clever Clean have cleaned, sealed and restored it to a pristine new looking driveway. We must recommend the sealing of the drive as that makes a tremendous improvement to the visual impact of not only the driveway, but the kerb appeal of the house itself.I totally recommend Mr Clever Clean for their excellent communication, professionalism, attitude and generally being amenable friendly people.Lord Peter T Saunders

Natalie from Mr Clever Clean in Peterborough was very helpful setting up & arranging quotes for the work we needed to have done.Colton & Nathan then did an excellent job yesterday - cleaning & treating our drive, a large patio & paths. They explained everything well, were really helpful & definitely went the extra mile.We are really pleased with the result & will ask them back next year. Thanks very much for doing such a great job guys !
Connor from Mr Clever Clean did an excellent job cleaning our large (over 100sqm) York stone patio which had not been cleaned for 10 years. It had a lot of significant black spots. We researched several patio cleaning firms as we were cautious as to whom we should entrust the cleaning of our patio. However, we needed to have had no fears with Connor. In just one full day he transformed it back into a fantastic, beautiful patio. Once again, the colours and contours of the stones gleamed in their beauty. We are absolutely delighted with Connor’s work and we know we are quite demanding clients.Connor fitted us in at short notice. He arrived on time and worked hard all day. Connor’s technical expertise is very good and his advice actually saved us money. He has over ten years’ of experience. The kit used is heavy duty and he had all the right PPE. Connor tidied up after himself. He washed down the patio windows which inevitably had got sprayed with mucky water and he left them gleaming too.Clever Clean does not have flashy overheads but instead provides a 5-star service at great value. Connor did a thoroughly brilliant job – he is a friendly real professional and we have no hesitation in recommending him. Our only question is why we hadn’t found Connor sooner!
Every job is different and we aim to get the job completed on the day (depending on the area size). We will have to return to your property to re-sand and add a sealant if required. We aim to complete every job within one week (weather dependent).
We do not beat quotes from other driveway cleaning companies. There are many other companies that may be cheaper, however the quality of their work falls below our standards. Our policy is a fair price for work carried out to the highest of service & standards.
There are lots of reasons why you should hire Mr Clever Clean instead of using your own pressure washer. If you have tried cleaning your own driveway or patio you will know how messy and time consuming it can become. Also it is increasingly tiring. The machinery we use is built to tackle the toughest of jobs in a safe manner. The results are significantly better than those that are achieved with a domestic pressure washer.
All our machinery is manufactured by Honda. We mainly use 13hp, 3000 psi pressure washers, Our rotary cleaners are up to 30 inches in diameter and are connected to the Honda. These tools are the best, they have a nylon brush skirt around the edge to keep a lid on the dirt and jets inside. This produces less mess against the property. You will love the results.
We offer a maintenance treatments program to keep the moss, algae and weeds away for up to 3 months. Once your drive is clear of moss and weeds we recommend 4 maintenance treatments per year to help keep the moss and weeds away. If any regrowth occurs we will remove it annually which is included if your have maintained your drive with our maintenance treatments.
Yes we do and it\’s called \”Clever Soft Wash\” for black spot, weeds & lichen treatments. This will kill the black spot, lichen, moss & weed at the same time. Pressure washing alone will not remove black spot lichen & pressure washing alone will not kill residual weed & moss.
As part of our driveway cleaning, block paving cleaning and patio cleaning services, using bespoke chemicals and high pressure cleaning techniques, we are able to remove most oil stains from concrete, tarmac, stone, block paving and paving slabs. Oil stain removal can be done at any time after a spill. High pressure washing alone will not remove the oil stain. It is a combination of a number of our techniques to remove as much as physically possible. Whilst, generally, we are able to remove the oil stain completely, we make you aware that 100% removal can not be guaranteed.
We use our gutter cleaning Sky Vac wet and dry vacuum with strong lightweight carbon fibre poles and specially developed cleaning heads and nozzles to suck all waste from your gutters up to 4 storeys high.
To carry out a gutter clean we will need access to the front & back areas. You don’t necessarily need to be there for us to carry out the clean as we carry our own generator for the electricity. On completion of the clean we will leave you an invoice where you can pay by Internet banking cheque-book or cash.
We will just clear just your gutter run if you want, but you can speak to your neighbour to take advantage of our neighbour discount if both jobs are booked at the same time and both gutter clears are completed on the same day.
We can do this for you and it will be double the price of the gutter clean quote. Clean the out side of the Gutters/Fascias/Soffits and Down Pipe. We also apply a specially formulated soft wash chemical that will clean and also kill all the algae, lichen growths
There are specific recommendations for minimum intervals between cleaning chimneys. These will vary depending on the amount of use and the type of fuel used.
We need space to work. So just make the area in front of the fireplace is clear. Any hot ash should also be removed the night before. Empty ashes and other debris and move away any hearth furniture and companion sets. We bring clean sheets with us.
Once I have bagged the soot from the vacuum, We will leave it with you to give your plants and vegetables a boost in the garden! or put it in your bin.
Blockages in chimneys connected to gas fires can lead to a build up of carbon monoxide. Although this happens less frequently it is wise to get professional advice from us about how often your chimney should be swept.
Don’t worry the good news is they fly away in just a few weeks. All the nesting material can be removed once they have left the chimney and a bird-guard fitted to stop them returning.
You might have an air pressure zone around the chimney when the wind blows in a certain direction or the ventilation in the room is inadequate. Cold chimneys located on outside walls need to warm up before they work well. We can recommend a cost-effective solution to solve this.
Yes. Sweeping your chimney will stop build-up of creosote and soot which reduces the danger of chimney fires and other risks such as soot falls and blockages. A typical sweep can also deal with obstructions such as birds nests, soot falls and building debris. A smoke draw test happens during all chimney sweeps.
We use a safe non aggressive product that has an excellent environmental footprint. The product does not damage the material being treated and there is no physical alteration of the surface.
We remove by hand 95% of moss. Soft wash the roof with Mr Clever Clean Soft Wash. The cleansing progresses starts immediately and the original colour of the roof tiles starts to come back within 2 hours. The moss & lichen is killed instantly and typically 12 months to erode away from the roof structure, this is dependent on weather conditions (rain/wind etc).
Moss generally grows in the vertical joint between tiles and often at the tail end. The end result is increased water ingress where tiles overlap which can damage the fixings and timber battens.
We cannot give you an exact timescale however typically we find that 5 to 8 years is possible. This all depends on mother nature and how aggressive the winters are during this period. Also cross contamination from trees or neighbouring properties can affect this timescale.
Every job is different and we aim to get the job completed on the day (depending on the area size). We aim to complete every job within one day (weather dependent).
Yes we do and it’s called “Clever Soft Wash” for black spot and lichen treatments. This will kill the black spot, lichen, moss & weed at the same time.
We use a safe non aggressive product that has an excellent environmental footprint. The product does not damage the material being treated and there is no physical alteration of the surface.

WITH the Government easing some of the lock down rules – last week saw the first steps to the rejuvenation of the property market and other elements of the UK economy.
And while the Prime Minister has urged those who are able to work from home to continue to do so, those who cannot do their job from home are being encouraged to return to work; while observing the Government’s social distancing rules.
This means that many Safe Local Trades members have returned to work; much of it of course which is carried out at customers’ homes.
So – how does this affect you if you require a tradesperson to visit your property?
In simple terms, you ARE permitted to ask a tradesperson to carry out work on your property (inside and out) or in your garden. It is personal choice on the part of the customer, as long as a few simple rules are adhered to.
Here’s what you need to know:
As of May 4, the Government guidance is that tradespeople can continue to work providing they are well, and they or no-one in their household has COVID-19 symptoms.
If your neighbour has tradespeople visiting their home; they are NOT flouting the social distancing rules simply by having work carried out at their property.
As a tradesperson or cleaner, you should maintain a safe distance (at least 2 metres) from any household occupants at all times, and ensure good ventilation in the area where they are working, including opening the window.
Any households self-isolating due to COVID-19 or anyone with vulnerable occupants cannot re-employ their workers as they risk spread of the virus according to the government guidance.
Before attending a job, maintenance workers should contact families 20 minutes before they arrive so homeowners can prepare to keep a safe 2 metre distance.
Once inside, they should wash hands for 20 seconds and adhere to the social distancing rules.
Eileen Le Voi, director of Safe Local Trades said: “While the Government’s announcement is welcome news for our members, we do understand that some customers may still feel a little anxious about allowing visitors into their home – particularly when members of their own family are not able to come and see them and the same applies to the family of the individual traders.
All our members are aware of the social distancing and other rules around carrying out home improvements at customers’ homes, and the importance of adhering to them.
We would advise customers who are thinking about resuming work in their home – perhaps those who need some home improvements prior to putting their property on the market, or others who have damaged fencing, security issues, blocked guttering or over grown trees and shrubs – to get in touch with the relevant trader through the Safe Local Trades website in the first instance. They can discuss any concerns they may have directly, and our traders will be more than happy to discuss those with the customer.
It may also be worth noting that many of our traders will now be looking to complete existing jobs booked before the pandemic, so now is a great time to get in touch if you need some decorating, landscaping, tiling or any other home improvement project which requires a professional, as their services will be in high demand.
Please be aware that due to the restrictions being lifted, the police have already seen a big increase in rogue trading so please do not engage with anyone who knocks on your door offering garden, driveway, roofing and any home improvements.

When was the last time you had your guttering checked? If, like most people, you can’t remember, then now might be time to get around to it.
Even though they’re “out of sight and out of mind” for the majority of the time, your gutters actually play a huge role in the structural integrity of your house, and keeping them clean is a great way to avoid the potentially costly expense of gutter repairs.
Gutters have one job: to guide rainwater off your roof and straight down the drain. Despite their importance, though, it can be all too easy to forget about them until something goes wrong. If your gutters become clogged or broken, the results can be serious: not only could you end up with structural damage, the resulting damp can cause health issues for you and your family.
Whether you have cast iron, plastic, or pressed steel gutters, they need to be cleaned annually in order to keep them performing properly, and to avoid the need for gutter repairs in the future. Read on to find out more about keeping your gutters well maintained.
What causes damaged or blocked gutters?
When thinking about how to avoid gutter repairs, it’s important to remember one simple fact: clean gutters are far less susceptible to damage than blocked gutters. In fact, the two most common gutter related issues facing homeowners are blockages in the gutter itself, and blockages in the downpipes. These blockages are often caused by debris like fallen leaves, moss, and (in some unfortunate cases) dead animals. One simple way to tell if you’re in need of gutter repairs is to take a step outside while it’s raining – if water is running down the side of your house, it’s likely that your gutters are blocked.
Leaking gutter joints are another common problem: in fact, leaking gutters are the most common cause of isolated damp in homes across the UK. Leaks can occur when bits of debris get caught in the joints, or simply from general wear and tear. If you’re experiencing damp in your property, it’s a good idea to check your gutters before you do anything else to see if that’s what’s causing the problem.
One final sign of damage to look out for is sagging gutters. This can happen when the gutter becomes weighed down by debris and standing water, or when there are rusty screws and faulty brackets. Frequent gutter cleaning can highlight these problems: you’ll easily be able to check how sturdy they are by examining the downpipe on the ground, and if anything feels a little loose you can take precautions before any real damage occurs.
How to fix damaged or blocked gutters
If you have damaged or blocked guttering, the easiest way to clear it is to call in the professionals – they’ll be able to advise on everything from clearing debris to showing you how to repair plastic gutter seams. They’ll need a ladder that reaches the roof, some thick gloves, a garden hose, a long piece of stiff wire, some small plastic garden bags to drop the debris into, and a scooping tool. If your gutters are made from a synthetic material such as PVC, make sure they don’t use a metal scraping tool, as this can cause damage and lead to more costly gutter repairs in the future.
Once they identify a blockage, they’ll start by removing any big pieces of debris from the gutter with the scoop. If the blockage is in your downpipe, they’ll use the wire to make a hole in the middle of the blockage. The next step is to run the water from the hose down the hole, which should start to clear the debris away. Once they’ve cleared the gutter, aim a hose onto your roof to make sure the water’s running freely – this will help you to identify any split or broken gutter seams. If you spot a problem, you’ll need to start thinking about booking in some more extensive gutter repairs.
If you do have leaking gutter joints it’s important to get them repaired as soon as possible. Sometimes, removing the section of guttering and gutter cleaning between the joint can fix the issue, as dirt can force your gutters apart. If there are cracks, they need to be filled in with sealant. This works for both PVC and metal guttering. Begin by having the area that needs to be repaired cleaned, and washing away any grime. Apply the sealant along the crack, ensuring that no gaps are left uncovered.
Is there a long-term solution to guttering maintenance?
It’s recommended that you get your gutters cleaned at least once a year. The best time to do this is at the beginning of winter, after the autumn leaves have fallen and before the really bad weather kicks in. This will reduce your chances of experiencing blocked guttering later on in the year, and gives you plenty of time to book in those vital gutter repairs before it gets too wet and windy. It’s also a good idea to do a quick check of your gutters in spring. Make sure that any large pieces of debris that have blown in over winter are removed, and check that all of the screws are tight and that no brackets are loose. Gutters can be damaged by heavy snow-fall and high winds, so it’s also wise to ensure everything’s in order after a spell of particularly bad weather.
If your neighbourhood has a lot of trees and debris is unavoidable, you can install a gutter guard. These act as a filter, catching leaves and preventing them from entering your gutters and downpipes while still catching the water. Although the guards won’t stop all debris from entering your gutters (you’ll still need to clean them at least once a year) they will keep the larger, more dangerous pieces from causing blockages, flooding, leakages, and sagging.
